For Leah Gallagos, the prospect that her company may soon be able to register .biz domain names is somewhat less than enticing. Gallagos, president of the Atlantic Root Network, a Virginia-based Internet registry, has been registering .biz addresses for the past five years.

DOT COM VICTORIOUS ! (as usual).

There is no scarcity of domain names in fact you can get great DOT COMS for very little and any serious company can afford them.

The legal troubles of NON-DOT COM extentions have just begun (are the tip of an iceberg) ...and point to the fact that it just makes good business sense to buy DOT COM in the first place and let the suckers waste their money in the courts or crying to ICANN.

... add this to the fact that DOT COMS are presently the only domains that have ANY resale value whatsoever at auction! Visit the auction sites, read em and weep!

Masmedia is right on for the most part. For most companies the place to be is .com. As for resale value the value of other extensions is greatly diminished say 1% - 10% of the .com at best. In most cases less. I will disagree with masmedia in one particular case. For truly exceptional domains ( especially over $1,000,000 in .com) a .net, .tv, or .org can have considerable value. For example a .org sold for over $200,000 on AN a year ago. And some .tv registrations involve annual fees of 5 and even six figures. I must point out that this is the exception rather than the rule.

Another big advantage of .com is that the ongoing registration fees are under $10 (we charge $8.99 at FineE.com) compare that over time with many *new* extensions, where there is little or no competition.

Before spending good money on some new extension take a good look at the many good .com domains on this site, offered in many cases at very reasonable prices. Then consider the ongoing maintenance cost in both cases. You will find that in many cases purchasing a .com in the aftermarket will not only provide you with a much better domain but may also turn out to be cheaper in the long run.

Something Doesn't "Add" Up . . . . . . . . . . . .
addideas1 4/13/01 09:23 PM EST

Greetings masmedia,

I think there a very few people that would argue the power of .COM as KING - long may he/she reign. Having said that, I wouldn't be to quick to discount regional loyalty to specific country code extensions, ie: .CA for Canadian shoppers, .co.uk for British shoppers etc etc. The fact of the matter is that 85% of currently registered .COM Domain Names remain undeveloped or unresolved. I imagine that this number will be the first to come down, largely due to the non-renewal status that many Domains will fall into, however, I would be curious to know what the combined percentage is for the ALL other extensions?

You raise a very interesting point with respect to the "legal troubles" of the other extensions. IMHO, the number one criteria applied when evaluating a Domain Name should be potential for Trademark problems. In fact, the "Universally Accepted Valuation Model" (UAVM) that I am working on with everyone, has it is the front runner for top spot in the model.

Warmest Regards and Thanks for Posting.

Yours For Success,
